Transcriptions

During my undergraduate studies I learned that in order to understand and play jazz music, we must be able to understand its language. One of the greatest tools to get this engrained in ourselves is transcribing. This applies to all genres of music! [As a drummer, transcribing also applies to any instrument, as there is a wealth of rhythmic language to be found in those that don’t play the drums.]

Below are several transcriptions from my time in undergrad as well as ones that I am working on now. All are free to download! I would sincerely appreciate if you could refer to my website or social media pages if you use them in your own videos or posts. Thank you!

Drums Unlimited

Max Roach

This is hands down my favorite open drum solo of all time. This transcription is from Max Roach’s 1966 album of the same name. If you haven’t already, I implore you to listen to this album. It is a masterclass in melodic drum solos.

Hallelujah Time

Ulysses Owens Jr.

This transcription comes from a more modern drummer, but is still exceptional. It comes from the 2013 Christian McBride Trio album “Out Here” featuring Christian Sands on piano, McBride on bass, and Owens Jr. on drums. Ulysses has several phenomenal solos on this record so check it out!

Temperance

Philly Joe Jones

Philly Joe Jones’ immense contribution and pioneering of jazz drum set playing cannot be understated — he is one of my personal favorite drummers of all time. This solo is from the 1960 album “Kelly At Midnight” featuring Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jones on drums is —in my opinion— one of his best solos.
